Tacuarembo

Specialty Museums · Waterfalls · Churches
Established by presidential decree in 1831, Tacuarembo grew over time into the capital of its eponymous department, largely because of its agricultural industry fed by the Tacuarembo river that flows through the northern part of town. Colonial-era buildings and nearby waterfalls, tributaries, and pools represent the most popular places to visit in Tacuarembo. An itinerary of both cultural and natural exploration may in fact mimic the journey of President Fructuoso Rivera's brother Bernabe Rivera, who set off under his brother's orders to find a fertile land for the new settlement. As the birthplace of tango star Carlos Gardel, the city's restaurants and bars come alive with traditional music and dance come evening, while the well-maintained public parks function as welcoming meeting places and host a range of cultural events throughout the year.
