Built to protect a lighthouse from British invasion, Fortaleza del Cerro stands proudly over the city, offering a fantastic view. The fortress, built in 1839, sit at the top of Cerro de Montevideo, some 439 ft (134 m) above sea level. Today, the historic building houses a military museum, home to a collection of firearms. The lighthouse protected by this fortress continues to operate and runs regular tours. The area around the fortress is a little bit rough, so stick to main roads or opt for a taxi to get here.
