Puerta de la Ciudadela, Colonia del Sacramento

#4 of 69 in Things to do in Colonia del Sacramento
Bridge · Tourist Spot
Walk through the only part of the city walls of Montevideo to remain standing at Puerta de la Ciudadela. Once part of the citadel that stood here until 1829 (when, upon Uruguay's independence, it was torn down to make way for the new city), the gate serves as a marker of the city's history and an entrance to the old town. Its attraction has little to do with the architecture, but rather with the history and culture behind it. Once you pass through, you will be in the old part of town, where you can walk the historical streets, peruse local goods, and try the cuisine.
