Fuerte de San Miguel, Chuy

#14 of 50 in Things to do in Rocha Department
Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
Head to Fuerte de San Miguel, an abandoned 18th century military fort. The Portuguese built the structure to defend the village from Spanish invaders, and the Spanish later reinforced it before abandoning it after Uruguayan independence was established. View the large stone ruins of the fort, restored in the 1930s and later declared a National Monument. Inside, view a collection of historical army uniforms, a small museum of military history, and an exhibit of watercolors by local artist Emilio Regalia.
