Set at the convergence of Washington, D.C.'s four quadrants, United States Capitol serves as both a symbol of the U.S. government and the home to the U.S. Congress. The Neoclassical-style structure was constructed in several stages between 1793 and 1863; however, renovations and structural tweaks to support the weight of the massive, 88 m (289 ft) dome continued well into the 20th century. Walk in and look around--and up--the rotunda contains artwork, statues of presidents and important American figures, and an extensive fresco on the ceiling. You can learn more about the history of the U.S. Congress, Washington, D.C., and the building itself at the visitor center, which is spread over three floors set entirely underground. You'll need to book a tour well in advance (and a tour is the only way visitors can access much of the interior), as tour space is extremely limited. It is our first time in Washington DC and we love it. What a beautiful city. The US Capitol its mind blowing. The architecture and the perfection of every little detail just take your breath away. The tours inside the Capitol are completely free. If you don’t have reservation, they’ll fit you in the next tour available. After seeing the Capitol, we went to the Library of Congress through the tunnel that connects both monuments. Very nice experience.
Fantastic free tour. We did the pentagon tour first and were very disappointed so this tour was a nice surprise! We booked a few weeks ahead and arrived before our time slot so they moved us up to the earlier tour. You are given a headset so it’s easy to hear your guide. The tour covers some of the major rooms, history of the building and the statues. Overall it was very interesting and a beautiful building to visit if you are in DC
