Sligo Creek flows eight miles through the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC - from its headwaters in Wheaton, through Silver Spring and then Takoma Park, underneath Riggs Road and through the western edge of Hyattsville. There it joins the Northwest Branch, which flows into the Anacostia River, until it becomes part of the Potomac River, flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. If you live south of Wheaton Regional Library, east of Georgia Avenue, and west of University Boulevard, Sligo is your watershed.Plan your visit to Sligo Creek Park and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Silver Spring trip itinerary planning app.
Sligo Friends have joined together in a non-profit, incorporated community organization. We put on clean-up and clear-out events in the park, offer indoor programs for learning, and organize guided outdoor explorations. We monitor civic developments and advocate for policies and decisions that will support a healthier Sligo.
Our hands-on work is organized by sections of the Creek and its tributaries. Each of the fifteen sections has a steward, who organizes local events and keeps an eye on conditions and needs of that part of the Creek. A seven-member Board of Directors guides activities and policies. We have a range of committees, who work with varying levels of activity on particular issues or interests.
The committees are: Water Quality, Stormwater, Litter, Natural History, Removal of Invasive Plants, and Outreach and Education.

Sligo Creek Park reviews
For my bicycling money, Sligo Creek Parkway is superior to Beech Drive (Rock Creek Park). Both are gentle downhill pleasures, shady cathedrals of lush, green trees, giving way to an occasional park... more »
This rec trail meanders through a valley along Sligo Creek in Silver Spring area. It is loaded with thick, tall trees so makes a great place to walk on a hot day. Watch for fast cyclists! more »
This park is so clean, it's somwhere you can bring your kids to play in the summer, the hills are also great for sleds in the snow, I saw a family there grilling, there's a basketball and tennis court. On the other side. (across Dennis) is the nature side. The creek is so relaxing. Just sit and listen. There were people walking and jogging on the trail, mom's pushing stroller, people everywhere so I felt really safe.
Enjoyed a great walk with my family this evening. Plenty of other friendly runners / bikers on the trail, makes you feel like part of a community. The paths are littered with benches to rest stop on of you or one of your party find yourselves so inclined.
