I cannot recommend Seattle Dive Tours highly enough for scuba training. Their prices are higher than some of the big shops in the area, but you get what you pay for. Let me explain. While some people are at home in the water and complete their open water certification with little trouble, I was not one of those people. In the pool, despite excellent instruction and encouragement from Kelly and Scott, I struggled extensively with the mask removal skill, ultimately panicking and needing to stop on the second day of class. At this point, I expected to lose at least a good portion of the money I paid for the class. To my surprise, even though they absolutely did not have to do so, the folks at Seattle Dive Tours simply rescheduled my pool and open water sessions for a later date at no extra charge, giving me some pointers on how to practice the mask removal skill on my own time using a mask and snorkel that I owned. On my rescheduled dates, I ended up coming back and completing all the skills without any issues. Diving in the cold waters of the Sound was definitely intimidating at first, and I even had yet another panicky situation while doing the regulator recovery skill in the Sound. Maddi, who taught our open water portion was so supportive and reassuring, and her and Billy’s (who was our shore support) gentle encouragement got me through the course. Throughout the whole experience, I was so grateful for the guaranteed small class size that Seattle Dive Tours has (2 people); I have no doubt that I would not have been able to finish without the individual instructor attention that this class size affords and frankly, I would not want to have missed out on all the additional knowledge that I learned from the instructors that was outside the purview of a standard open water diver course. I never felt rushed, I was always free to ask whatever questions I wanted, and the instructors could give me individualized insight into my strengths, but also areas where I needed improvement. I also ended up breaking the neck seal on my dry suit while taking it off. These are expensive to replace, so I offered to pay for it, but Seattle Dive Tours categorically refused my offer, despite the fact that at this point I think they might have been losing money on me! This is a business that truly, truly, prioritizes the satisfaction of their customers. Everyone at Seattle Dive Tours I interacted with during my time in this course - Maddi, Kelly, Billy, Scott, and Mark - besides being wonderful instructors, are also just lovely people, and I feel truly privileged to have been able to take a course with them. If you are debating whether or not you should spend the extra money on a scuba course here, I recommend you do yourself a favor and go for it.
My wife and I just completed PADI open water certification through Seattle Dive Tours, and they are nothing short of exceptional. For someone like me, who was fairly nervous going in, I loved their instructor-to-student ratio -- one professional for two newbies -- and felt thoroughly cared for and safe the entire time. Everyone we met and worked with was warm, welcoming, hugely knowledgeable and patient. Seriously, couldn't have had a more positive experience, and we can't wait to get out in the water again soon!
