Colorful scenes line a block-long alley affectionately known as Balmy Alley Murals. The first murals popped up in 1972, and the collection expanded throughout the 1980s as part of a foundation-funded project with emphasis on Central American cultures. The colorful illustrations depict a number of social and political issues, including human rights outrage, gentrification, the Nicaraguan revolution, the Guatemalan civil war, and Hurricane Katrina; scenes are always changing. Walk the alley on your own or with a local touring company. Nearby you'll also find many restaurants and stores. At the first glance this place does not appear to be the nicest of neighborhoods. However, once we were able to find a street parking spot, the area looked just okay especially when it was 10 in the morning. I really liked the artistic freedom with which some artists have tried to express themselves, even though their opinion might not be acceptable to all. This place is worth having a look if you have 15 minutes of spare time.
This is the loveliest little alley to walk down. The murals have so many political messages - the artworks are very thought provoking. I had some really nice chats with the artists who were working. Very nice of them sharing their method. The area around is lovely too - esp the North end of the alley which has nice little eateries.
