One of the oldest cathedrals in the country and a great example of Spanish colonial architecture, San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral was founded in 1731, and today holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The church serves as the epicenter of Roman Catholicism in the city, and draws a large number of visitors and locals to its services and events. With symmetrical towers, high doorways, and stained-glass windows, the cathedral is reminiscent of grand European churches. The current Gothic-style appearance dates to renovations during the 1860s and 1870s. Don't miss the tomb of Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, who fell defending the Alamo. According to local legend, remains of more fallen Texans lie beneath the floors of the newer sections. One of the most beautiful cathedrals in San Antonio or anywhere else. This is where I lit a candle in memory of my 27 year old daughter who passed away in 2013. It is full of History and at the left entrance there are bodies actually buried under there. I could truly feel the presence of Jesus while I was in there
We're didn't actually go in, we just saw the "saga" show, but it was beautiful and enjoyable. Is not narrated, only music and colors which is a bit too bad because there are so many references to many things that you can't really get unless you know your San Antonio history very well. I feel like I was only able to pick up on maybe half of the stories. Still, quite beautiful.
