First established by Catholic missionaries on the frontier of the Spanish Southwest, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park highlights the history behind the colonization of this area. Take a step back into the 18th century and explore the four preserved missions located on the property: Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Free, hour-long, and highly recommended guided ranger tours depart from the visitor center at Mission San Jose. While the missions are accessible by foot or bike via the riverwalk trail, they are quite spread out, so traveling by car is recommended. I have visited the various San Antonio Missions several times over the last 40 years. I was happy to see the recent updates, including paved parking, wheelchair friendly entrances and paths, and public restrooms. Several buildings have been conserved/stabilized since my last visit (a decade ago). A beautiful look at some amazing history.
