McNay Art Museum, the first modern-art museum in Texas, houses permanent and temporary exhibits of Modernist, Impressionist, Renaissance and Medieval, and 19th- and 20th-century works. The collection contains works by international artists, such as Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, and Pablo Picasso. The Southwest collection includes Native American and New Mexican folk art. The 9 hectare (23 acre) property also features a Japanese-inspired garden filled with the museum's extensive collection of outdoor sculptures. We went with family and very much enjoyed the art, sculptures and the beautiful architecture and details of the home. The art glass was amazing, my favorite after the painted ceilings and iron work..... more »

Had such a pleasant Sunday strolling through this museum. It was a free Sunday, paid $10 bucks to see the Andy Warhol: Portraits exhibition. Original fees are 20 bucks for adults, 19 and under are free! The idea of strolling though this beautiful historic mansion AND enjoying master art is a must for those that need a break from life...or a little inspiration. I sat outside in the patio for a while, then by the fountain in a little wooden pergola and left as a 5pm wedding was about to begin. (They close at 5 on Sundays.) Parking was pretty easy(and free) although I can see how it can maybe get packed...and it was a bit difficult to find..(well, not really, it's on New Braunfels St., but there really isn't a sign on that street telling you where the entrance is. I missed it and had to go back around. I found it that second time.). There is a cafe inside....but I didn't check it out. There are plenty of eateries around though... Can't wait to go back.

Went specifically to see the Transamerica/n exhibit on the free general admissions night, which meant our tickets were only $10 each for the highlighted exhibits. The exhibit was incredibly inclusive and exactly what I had been hoping for, with the infeasible Nicki Lucio doing live performance self portrait art. She spoke to us for a good amount of time about herself, her work and her experiences and it was by far one of the most valuable experiences of my life so far. I would suggest the McNay definitely take advantage of any other artist interested in doing performance art or live painting as a part of their pieces.
