Portland Japanese Garden sits nestled in the hills of Portland, overlooking the city and providing a tranquil, urban oasis for locals and travelers alike. Designed in 1963, it encompasses eight separate garden styles and includes an authentic Japanese tea house, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. In 2017, the garden created the cultural village, a place where visitors can immerse themselves in traditional Japanese arts through seasonal activities, performances, and demonstrations. Finally, visitors can relax and refresh while at the umami cafe. Here, visitors can experience the pairing of Japanese tea with traditional gracious, attentive service, and delicious edible delights. A beautiful place, getting there is a little bit of a steep walk, varied terrain, but so very worth the time. Many beautiful vistas and corners to be explored.

Definitely worth visiting the gardens. Having lived in Japan for 5 years prior, I was really glad to see that this garden was more than just a bunch of Japanese plants put together. This garden definitely incorporates design found in Japan that inspires a sense of tranquility. Everyone who was present at the garden was also very respectful and quiet during the visit. It was a great place to take in the nature and calm atmosphere.

As a landscaping designer and builder in California I love gardens and I know a thing or two. Everywhere we go with my family we visit different kinds of gardens. I have not seen anything like this. The peace and happiness while enjoying a walk in this garden is hard to explain in words. I'm in awe. Every tourist who visits Portland, Oregon must see and enjoy this majestic garden. Arrive early for easy access to parking.
