Offering a safe way to explore the Sonoran Desert, Papago Park attracts visitors with its rock formations and wide variety of desert plants, including giant saguaro cacti. In addition to its extensive network of dirt and paved trails, the hilly desert park houses a botanical garden and a large zoo. The park contains sandstone formations created at least 6 million years ago, and they are notable, but its signature feature remains a small pyramidal tomb of Arizona's first governor, built in 1931 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. To orient yourself in the undeveloped desert areas, download or print a tri-fold trail map from the park's website before you visit. Great and diverse area to do photoshoots in. Saw a lot of people going hiking and having a picnic as well in this area. Overall pretty diverse and great area to visit. more »
I used to like this park and visited often. Back in the day it was possible to enjoy a quiet hike here. But the building of hundreds of apartments and condos along McDowell Road has meant that the... more »
Located right in Phoenix and it's amazing! Climb up to the hole in the rock - it's an easy hike. There is a lake where people were fishing and small, stone buildings to sit and have lunch in. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning here! Nice trail... water and bathroom accessible and it’s not far from hole in the rock which is a great tourist attraction. I came at 7 am and there were 10 other tourists! Highly recommended. Plenty to see and it's all free! It's now added to our list for our annual trip to AZ! Warning: bring water :)
When I visited here (the beginning of August), it was 135 degree F. I would like to go to desert botanical park but the bus only went to the zoo due to road construction, so I walked 20 minutes by the trail from the zoo to desert botanical park. The photos which I posted here are taken on the tail. It is the most unforgettable experience for me in Phoenix, and I really like the park, the scene, the animals, and the plants inside.
