Camelback Mountain, Phoenix

Mountain · Nature / Park
Named for its peculiar shape, Camelback Mountain is one of the city's most popular and recognizable landmarks. Once a sacred site of the prehistoric Hohokam Indians, the mountain today features two hiking trails that ascend the 390 m (1,280 ft) peak: the Echo Canyon trail stretches 1.9 km (1.2 mi), and the Cholla trail covers the climb in 2.3 km (1.4 mi). Getting to the top will reward you with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, however both trails are steep and difficult. For a more relaxed visit, enjoy a picnic in one of the mountain's recreational areas, where you might spy lizards, snakes, and birds. Pay special attention while walking, as many rattlesnakes inhabit the area. Put Camelback Mountain and other Phoenix attractions into our Phoenix online trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • This was spectacularly fun couple of hours. The trail is unlike anything I've been on, with boulders, slabs, stairs and railings. It was a great workout with stunning views. Great fun all the way.....  more »

  • An excellent place to overlook the city during the sunset. Climbing in the daytime during the summer is highly not recommended. Bringing some water with you is always a good idea.
  • Amazing place to hike. I would recommend to go in the early morning or in the evening. It takes 1,5h up and then 1,5h down, but with many breaks and easy. In the end it is really steep.
