Red sandstone rock formations more than 150 million years old lend the name to Valley of Fire State Park. Established in 1935, Nevada's oldest park spans nearly 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) and includes ample hiking and camping opportunities. You’ll have the chance to explore different geological formations, such as limestone and shale. Because the sandstone is so soft, you’ll see petroglyphs (rock art carved into the sandstone), dating as far back as 300 BCE created by the ancient Anasazi Pueblo people. The visitor center details the geologic and archaeological roots of the region. If you keep a sharp eye out, you may even spot the rare desert tortoise. Valley of Fire State Park reviews
This place is a little gem not far from Vegas and we did not plan enough time here. We started our day heading to Utah to visit a slot canyon. We stopped in Little Jamaica (a swimming hole) on our..... more »
The national park committee needs a swift kick in the butt; how they're not designating this place a national park is beyond me. Perhaps the locals want a lower profile in remaining a state park for.... more »
Made the drive from Vegas to here on a recommendation, and loved it so much we went back a week later! Being from Indiana (flatter than a sheet of particle board), this state park blew my mind! Hiking for all ranges of comfort from "Grandma could hike this" to "Oh no, I should not have tried this without being a Navy Seal". The scenery is unreal, and one look at the colors let you know why it is called "valley of Fire". MAKE SURE to check out Elephant rock!
Loved it. Nature is powerful and doesn't happen over night! We were blown away by everything we saw! There are many stop by where you can enjoy the sceneries, take pictures, picnic, hiking etc. Careful with the heat if you plan to visit during the summer. The entrance fee is very accessible: $10 per car. This is a must do. It was one of our dreams and it was way better than what we thought
