The Sterling Hill Mine, now known as the Sterling Hill Mine Tour & Museum of Fluorescence, is a former iron and zinc mine in Ogdensburg, Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. It was the last working underground mine in New Jersey when it closed in 1986, and it became a museum in 1989. Along with the nearby Franklin Mine, it is known for its variety of minerals, especially the fluorescent varieties. This was an amazing experience! Not your regular run of the mill tourist attraction but it's family friendly and wheelchair accessible. Kids will love it! Good guides and they patiently answer all questions you may have. Tours start 10am and 1pm and take about 2 hours to complete. The tours are in a manageable group of 25 people at a time. They have a rock museum where they turn on ultraviolet light and all the rocks glow! The entire group let out a collective "wow"! It does get chilly once you are inside the mine. A light jacket is recommended.

This museum is phenomenal... absolutely great. My group took a tour of the mine and museum with Brianna and loved it. She's a great tour guide and we all learned a ton. The history here is fascinating as is the geology. The mineral and ephemera collections are immense and world class. I can't wait to come back and spend another day here.
