White Horse Tavern, New York City

2.3

The White Horse Tavern, located in New York City's borough of Manhattan at Hudson Street and 11th Street, is known for its 1950s and 1960s Bohemian culture. It is one of the few major gathering-places for writers and artists from this period in Greenwich Village (specifically the West Village) that remains open. The bar opened in 1880 but was known more as a longshoremen's bar than a literary center until Dylan Thomas and other writers began frequenting it in the early 1950s. Due to its literary fame, in the past few decades the White Horse has become a popular destination among tourists.

  • We come here. In the “before coronavirus times” and the new ownership, you could rely on getting some mediocre, satisfying late-night bar food. It far exceeded the quality of our last purchase there.....  more »
  • This is an awesome place to gather with your friends and have either a few or 15 drinks. Everybody in the place is mellow and doing the same thing, so you will have company. I think they stopped...  more »

  • We stopped by White Horse to grab a drink while waiting for a restaurant reservation next door. The bar was packed. We grabbed a table in the dining section. The service was pretty good, but we were told to sit at a table right next to the bathroom. The area smelled horrible every time the bathroom door opened. We asked to be reseated at the only open table nearby, but were turned down due to the fact that we were a party of four and the table sat six. We stayed there until we finished our round of drinks, and no one sat at that other table the whole time, which was frustrating. However, the servers did stop by a few times to check on us, which was nice, and the drinks were reasonably strong. We felt that there's no real reason for us to come back given the overall mediocre experience, but I recommend that everyone checks this bar out at least once for it's historical significance.
  • I love this bar, the atmosphere is great, the drinks are great and last night my wallet fell out of my bag and when I went back today they had kept it safely for me behind the bar. Thank you so much White Horse crew! You all are lovely!
