Most of the important functions of the United Nations are coordinated at United Nations Headquarters. Considered to be international ground, the complex includes the buildings of Secretariat, General Assembly, Library, and Conferences. See some of the main council chambers of the United Nations, and learn about the ways it deals with issues such as disarmament, peace and security, and human rights. Visit the postal counter where you can buy stamps that can only be mailed from the United Nations. The site also has a bookstore and shop where you'll find traditional handicrafts, gifts, and accessories. In order to be eligible for a tour, you need to purchase a ticket in advance online. Don’t bother coming on the weekends, there really isn’t much to do other than walk around the General Assembly and the courtyard. Try getting a tour if you can. However, the building itself is really impressive, and is filled with history. The overall feel from the interior is reminiscent of an upscale conference centre from the 80s.
Good place to visit with kids. There could be too many views expressed on the organization by too many people depending on which side of the coin they see. But helps to show the next generation the lofty ideals and vision envisioned by great people. Who knows one of those kids might be inspired enough to go on to further those ideals.
