The Richard Rodgers Theatre is a Broadway theater located at 226 West 46th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue, in New York City. The theatre was built by Irwin Chanin in 1925 and was originally called Chanin's 46th Street Theatre. Chanin almost immediately leased it to the Shuberts, who bought the building outright in 1931 and renamed it the 46th Street Theatre. In 1945, the theatre was taken over by Robert W. Dowling. In 1960, it was purchased by the producer Lester Osterman., who sold it to producers Stephen R. Friedman and Irwin Meyer in 1978. In 1981, it was purchased and renovated by the Nederlander Organization, who in 1990 changed the house's name in memory of the composer Richard Rodgers.Arrange your visit to Richard Rodgers Theatre and discover more family-friendly attractions in New York City using our New York City trip itinerary planning app.
The theatre currently holds the distinction of having housed the greatest number (eleven) of Tony Award-winning Best Plays and Best Musicals, more than any other theatre on Broadway.
The Richard Rodgers Theatre is notable in that it was the first to feature Chanin's 'democratic' seating plan. In most earlier Broadway theatres, patrons seated in the cheaper balcony and mezzanine sections utilized separate entrances from patrons who had purchased the more expensive orchestra section seats. Instead, all patrons entered the new theatre through the same doors, and a series of steps inside the house led to the upper seating areas.

Richard Rodgers Theatre Reviews
Amazing venue! It was easy to view the entire stage from our seats. We saw Hamilton here and the venue was very accommodating and comfortable. more »
I’m never disappointed with Hamilton! This was my second time seeing the broadway company (12th time total) and it’s perpetually my favorite thing. The theatre itself truly doesn’t have a bad seat... more »
Beautiful, majestic theater! Our seats were all the way on the left side of the mezzanine, but still great seats. The stage is huge, and it was fun to see how the actors used every part of it throughout the entire show. It doesn't seem like there's a bad seat in the theater. Everything worked together for an excellent experience!
This is a gorgeous theater! The sound and acoustics are fantastic. We were seated pretty far back and still the view of the stage was amazing. The only down side is that there are only bathrooms on the 1st floor so go before the show. And the seats are insanely small. You'll feel like your sitting nearly on top of the person next to you. But beyond that it's lovely theater.
