Museum of the City of New York explores the past, present, and future of one of the world's most famous cities. The red-brick, neo-Georgian building, built in 1929 and 1930, boasts a vast collection of items related to the city, with a particularly extensive dedication to objects from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Learn about New York, its people, and its distinctive character through paintings, prints, antiques, and other artifacts. The museum's photos includes works by a number of famous photographers. Don't miss the museum's rare items, such as the chair that belonged to Sarah Rapelje, said to be the first child born in New York of European parents. You can grab a bite to eat afterward at Chalsty's Cafe. For Museum of the City of New York and beyond, use our New York City travel planner to get the most from your New York City vacation.

Museum of the City of New York Reviews
We bumped into a volunteer right off the bat, and her recommendation to watch the 30-minute movie narrated by Stanley Tucci was 100% right on! Whole museum great! more »
This museum is very well presented and features a detailed and interesting description of the history of New York plus numerous analyses of current social and demographic trends in the city. more »
I love this museum. I've been twice (about 5 years between each visit) and have always enjoyed the experience there. The current exhibits have an immigration theme and are very informative. There's an interactive one as well which let's you look at various parts of the city and its demographics. There's also a great film about the beginnings of NYC. The gift shop has wonderful souvenirs and the cafe has some yummy snacks.
An excellent museum, with a compelling range of photographs, information, and artefacts related to New York City from its foundations to the present day. Topics covered included music, activism, immigration, economics, transportation, and architecture. Significantly, everything on show was accompanied by just the right amount of information — no extra booklets or audio guides required. There was also a good range of multimedia and interactive elements, and everything was laid out sympathetically. All members of staff were friendly and helpful. A small cafe and shops augment the main attraction. We visited shortly after a trip to the Guggenheim — it's a short walk along the same road — and much preferred what this museum had to offer. It wasn't too crowded, was slightly cheaper (technically, you can pay what you want!), and offered a lot more. We spent a couple of hours here, but that could easily have been twice as much if we'd had the time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this museum to anyone with at least a passing interest in New York City, and I will certainly return next time I'm in Manhattan.
