Japan Society is a non-profit organization formed in 1907 to promote friendly relations between the United States and Japan. Its headquarters, the youngest landmark building in New York, was designed by Junzo Yoshimura and opened in 1971 at 333 East 47th Street near the United Nations. With a focus on promoting "arts and culture, public policy, business, language, and education," the organization has regularly held events in its many facilities, including a library, art gallery, and theater, since its opening. After suspending all activities during World War II, Japan Society expanded under the leadership of John D. Rockefeller III.Plan to visit Japan Society during your New York City vacation using our convenient New York City online road trip planner.
Japan Society Reviews
I came in today to see the "Made in Japan" exhibition which I highly recommend even though it is closing soon. It was a great exhibition if you like the history of architecture and Urban Planning and.... more »
Interesting place near the United Nations head quarters. Not very interesting to be honest. Not recommended more »
I think the Japan Society has a lot of unique things to offer for people in New York City. They have really great events. I love going to the discussions they usually have and it is a great place to meet people and network. Usually these events have Japanese food at the end, which is also very delicious. I have been to about 3-4 events hosted by them while I was working at the United Nations. They do treat students well and give good rates (free times) for interns at the United Nations
We love it here. We have been attending events here for just about 12 years--I've just before our older daughter, Kata, was born. Haruna has done an excellent job of speaking Japanese to both of our girls--and, as a result, they are bilingual. They attend a Japanese Saturday school in the City, where they learn numerous aspects of the language and culture. The Japan Society--with their numerous wonderful events--is an excellent augmentation to this process of helping our children better understand their Japanese selves!
