  • What a wonderful insight into Harlem culminating in an amazing church service that we have never experienced before. Thank you so very much for the uplifting moments.
  • First...our guide, Damian....hire him again, Harlem Spirituals! He’s interesting and informative. We learned a lot. Highway Church....I can’t thank you enough for welcoming us into your sanctuary. It was a highlight of our visit to NYC. Now....Shame on you, Harlem Spirituals, for turning what should have been an amazing experience into a nightmare. We were “greeted” at the entrance to your offices by two, let’s say, “assertive” and not very welcoming bouncers who barked orders at us and others in a futile effort to squeeze too many people into your small office space. My husband needed to use the restroom and you sent him to Starbucks. You might want to rethink that. Starbucks has no restrooms. Starbucks sent him to McDonalds across the street. They have restrooms for paying customers. My husband waited in line, bought a coffee, and showed his receipt to the restroom guard to be given the privilege of using the facilities. By then, my mother and I had made our way to the chaos of Harlem Spiritual buses on 44th Street where we searched for our bus. My husband, who doesn’t see well, stepped onto the wrong bus looking for us. The guide on the Italian-language bus, who would be a great drill instructor, barked at my husband for boarding the wrong bus. You might want to have a chat with him about his unfriendly manner. Once we were on the bus, Damien was wonderful! Hire him again. Do not hire the bus company again, though. I take that back. The bus and driver were good, but when you hired the bus, you didn’t spring for the package that includes unlocking the onboard toilet. I’m sure it was clean, because it was locked and unavailable for use. By the time we got to the Apollo theater, at least two people on the bus, my husband included, were desperate for a bathroom. In a true déja vu moment, my husband learned that Starbucks has no bathroom, but McDonalds across the street might, At Damien’s suggestion, my husband begged and pleaded with the guard at the Apollo, who reluctantly allowed him to use the bathroom there. The woman from our bus, who also begged and pleaded, was turned away. From that point on, everything was wonderful. The church service was powerful. The congregation was gracious and welcoming. And guess what....the church had bathrooms! What a relief! So, sadly, I would not recommend this tour. Find a church, grab an Uber, and go to Harlem on your own. That way you’ll be able to enjoy the experience without the stress of getting there on a Harlem Spirituals bus. Oh, and take Damien with you. He’s amazing.
