Don’t Tell Mama – The story

DTM started as a Piano Bar Cabaret. Established in 1982, Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar and Cabaret is world famous as a New York Entertainment Landmark. The origin of the name Don’t Tell Mama is the title of a song by John Kander & Fred Ebb from the 1966 Broadway Musical “Cabaret”.

DTM is located on Restaurant Row in the heart of the Theatre District. An award winning venue, featured in numerous TV Shows from “Friends” to “Saturday Night Live”. Performers who began their careers at Don’t Tell Mama have gone on to become the $100,000 Grand Prize Winner on “Star Search”, win the Emmy, Grammy, Tony, Oscar and the Pulitzer Prize!

In 2008, the new owner added more “flavor” to the place opening the Don’t Tell Mama Restaurant.

  • What an awesome place. The staff are the entertainment and take turns. Your server is bringing you drinks one minute and on stage the next. Very very talented people, all trying to make it and be discovered. Food is absolutely amazing. Definitely worth the visit. Would love to go back, some day.
  • The comedy show was great until the last act. The feature comic was a complete jerk & attacked us because we didn’t laugh. We left & the manager said he would talk to us outside to make it right. We got outside & he laughed & said he only told me that so we would leave. I guess that’s why there were only a dozen people in the room for the show.
