Columbus Park formerly known as Mulberry Bend Park, Five Points Park and Paradise Park, is a public park in Chinatown, Manhattan, in New York City that was built in 1897. During the 19th century, this was the most dangerous ghetto area of immigrant New York, as portrayed in the book and film Gangs of New York. Back then, the park's site was part of the Five Points neighborhood, in the area known as Mulberry Bend, hence its alternative names. It was renamed Columbus Park in 1911, in honor of Christopher Columbus. Today, the park often serves as a gathering place for the local Chinese community, where "the neighborhood meets up here to play mahjong, perform traditional Chinese music... [and] practice tai chi in the early mornings."
In 2019, a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen by Lu Chun-Hsiung and Michael Kang was permanently installed in the northern plaza of the park. The plaza was also renamed for the founder of the first Republic of China, who lived in Manhattan's Chinatown for a time.
In Oct 2021, a large-scale crochet mural made of over 1,500 flowers was put up on the fences of Columbus Park by Chinatown Yarn Circle and Think!Chinatown.

  • The Columbus Park is located in Chinatown with plenty of trees, benches and open space. However, It was kind of crowded and the maintenance wasn’t too good. There was lots of trash and the smell...

  • I got up early for breakfast at a little restaurant across the street and walked over to watch locals practice tai chi in the park. I’m always interested in how folks in the city spend their time...

  • Happened to walk passed it on my way out of Chinatown in June 2022. On the map, no one would be able to tell that a place called Columbus Park would actually be a gathering place for mainly Chinese people and a place to commemorate the work of Sun Yat Sen who fought for China to become a Republic. It was a nice place with a lot of activities. Full of mainly elderly Chinese playing board games and, of course, gambling with no cash visibly changing hands. There were a few Chinese gentlemen singing Chinese songs accompanied by someone on a Chinese flute. Just adjacent to the park was a basketball court where young people of several races were playing together.
  • Went to NFTBA for a basketball tournament, really great vibe and very interactive. The park was spacious. Really had the New York essence! Good for shooting around and relaxing. One thing be aware of homeless people in the park they can be pushy. Otherwise it’s great for the youth!
