The Church of the Transfiguration is a Roman Catholic parish located at 25 Mott Street on the northwest corner of Mosco Street (formerly Park Street) in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The parish is under the authority of the Archdiocese of New York and is staffed by the Maryknoll order.History and descriptionThe church was built in 1801 in the Georgian style of architecture for the Zion English Lutheran Church., a Lutheran congregation that subsequently converted en masse to the Protestant Episcopal Church. The church then became known as Zion Protestant Episcopal Church. It was rebuilt after a major fire in 1815 which gutted the church and 35 dwellings in the surrounding Five Points neighborhood. The church was rebuilt thanks to the effort of congregation member Peter Lorillard. The Episcopal congregation sold the building in 1853 to the Roman Catholic Church of the Immigrants parish, which had been founded in 1827 by the Rev. Felix Varela y Morales to minister to the poor Irish in the Five Points who were predominantly Roman Catholic. The parish later changed its name to the Church of the Transfiguration. Our New York City journey planner makes visiting Church of the Transfiguration and other New York City attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Picturesque setting set back from the street. Old brick walk way to what is a large Chapel. The setting is very shady which makes the inside a little dark, this only adds to it's charm. Light a candle.... more »
Church of the Transfiguration located at 29 Mott Street in Chinatown, NYC is where I was baptized when I was a little toddler. It is a very old Catholic church, and they conduct mass is English and Chinese. It is also a Catholic School that teaches grade school to 8th grade. The inside of the church is small compare to the other churches in NYC. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival 19.
Beautiful old church. Gorgeous ceiling with gold and cream detail. Originally Italian parish but now vibrant Chinese community runs it and is in heart if Chinatown. So glad it was not destroyed/sold/let run down. English mass said on Sunday well attended. I learned that Dorothy day worked in this neighborhood and helped the poor here. Great history. May this church survive and thrive for many more centuries to come!
