Designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp and constructed by the Shuberts, it opened on December 20, 1928, with The Kingdom of God, a play selected by leading lady Ethel Barrymore. It is the only surviving theatre of the many the Shuberts built for performers who were affiliated with them. It has been used continuously as a legitimate house, unlike many of the older theatres that have been used for a variety of purposes throughout the years.Put Barrymore Theatre and other New York City attractions into our New York City online travel planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

Barrymore Theatre Reviews
A beautiful theatre. The show you're seeing determines the location, but the Barrymore is lovely. If there's a show you want to see there, I'd recommend it. more »
We saw The Band's Visit here and sat in the front mezzanine. The theater staff was very well organized and friendly. Our entry into the theater before the show was the quickest I've experienced on..... more »
Wow what a cool theatre. Very intimate, every seat is a good seat. The staff was very helpful, the restrooms and bar service was quick and clean. They were very strict with the cameras so don't try to sneak any pics! You can feel and sense the history too - so many stars have performed here. See something here:
The historic Barrymore theatre is a beautiful example of old Broadway. Lovely decor surrounding a large proscenium arch stage. The ceilings are particularly lovely with beautiful carvings all around, however the seats are about as old as the theatre, which means they are small and narrow. This makes them uncomfortable for anyone who might be larger than your average early 20th century human. So dress lightly and enjoy the scenery as well as whatever amazing Broadway show you are seeing there!
