The 181-room hotel, opened in 1902, was designed by architect Goldwin Starrett. It was originally conceived as an apartment hotel but was quickly converted to a traditional lodging establishment. Its first owner-manager, Frank Case (who bought the hotel in 1927), established many of the hotel's traditions. Perhaps its best-known tradition is hosting literary and theatrical notables, most prominently the members of the Algonquin Round Table.

Algonquin Hotel Reviews
The bar at this hotel is historic because literary figures met here for years to have fun and to discuss their projects. We came here for very, very expensive cocktails. But it's a lovely room. more »
I was considering AirBnB for our Xmas Holidays. But this hotel turned out to be exceptional. With good for money values, we stayed for 5 days and 4 nights here. With kids flying in from Texas while... more »
We stayed here last weekend and it quickly became one of our favorite spots in the City. The way they have tried to preserve the hotel's literary tradition and give it an artistic taste is brilliant. Yes, the rooms are as small as any Times Square hotel (and as noisy), but it is a stay you will remember. They were very open to a late check-out, which can be a lifesaver if you stayed up late the night before. There is a destination fee, and although it forces you to spend some money in the hotel's super expensive bar or restaurant, it is not too bad. We had an issue with our bill though: the receptionist misinformed us about the breakfast being included in the rate. Then they not only charged us for it, but somehow over charged (almost double) for a breakfast for 2. The manager, however, was very helpful in settling this and refunding the charges. The bottomline: hotel ambience and its managers are nice, but make sure to know exactly how much they are going to charge you and double check what is included. Also: the restaurant and the bar are too expensive. Finally, don't forget to see the resident cat!
Wonderful hotel. Full of history, well maintained. Rooms are cozy with high standard and newly refurbished bathrooms. The staff was extraordinary friendly. We travelled with two children (6 and 7) and were very well taken care off. We will highly recommend this hotel in NY, also for families with children.
