This plantation house sits on land owned by the Washington family since the 17th century, and shows examples of Palladian-style architecture. The site includes a number of main buildings, including the mansion itself and surrounding annexes. You can visit rooms restored to replicate those used by George and Martha Washington. This place is wonderful! Absolutely beautiful...has been kept up very well. Loved so many things here. Plan to spend the day and picnic even but if you only have a few hours like we did you can still get in a lot. The house tour runs like a well oiled machine. The guides get you through quickly but informed and you see it all. The views from the house over the water are wonderful. This place is fully staffed and there seemed to be friendly people everywhere we went who were helpful and informative....even the very neat period dressed characters who would greet you and take you back in time. Great gift shops here with unique items ...a bit pricey but not terrible. Wear your walking shoes and dress according to days weather forecast as you are outside a good bit.

I hadn't been here since the 1970's. Some of it I remembered, but most I had not. It's so beautiful! To sit on the front porch and feel the breezes off the Potomac was wonderful and serene, as nothing has been built to obscure the view. There was no museum then, nor a restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed Mount Vernon. Learning history is wonderful!
