Walk the decks of Battleship USS ALABAMA, the highly decorated U.S. Navy ship that served for 37 months in World War II, now a museum at Battleship Memorial Park. The ship is half as long as the Empire State Building is tall and weighs 44,500 tons. Initially, the military intended to scrap the ship in 1962 due to its maintenance costs, but Alabama school children and corporate fundraising saved the ship and brought it back to its home state in 1964. After you’ve explored the historical vessel, you can step inside a World War II submarine, see cockpits of military aircrafts, or even enjoy a picnic on the park’s grounds. This experience was amazing we spent 6 hours touring this site. Everyone should visit to better understand history. This museum provides a deeper appreciation of the sacrifices that were made defending our freedom. Donations are appreciated to help preserve this priceless piece of history! The retired volunteer service personnel were a wealth of knowledge. This would make a great class or group trip.
We loved the 3 different self guided tours with the arrows and the numbers to follow, it was excellent and super easy! Fascinating piece of history with little factoids all along the tour routes. The inside was nice with the a/c but topside was awful with the heat, we really wanted to go all the way to the top but the metal rails were burning our hands. The hanger with all the planes was awesome as was the sub, the USS Drum. There really needs to be a light at the entrance/exit to the park because getting in and out was a nightmare. All in all a great experience though and lots of fun.
