At Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, observe the habitats of more than 500 species of land and marine animals living in this protected region along the Atlantic Ocean. This refuge is home to more than 1,000 species of plants and 21 endangered animals. Watch for alligators, manatees, bald eagles, and the Florida panther. Hike, drive, or boat through accessible areas of the park, and be sure to stop by the observation deck for a wider view of your surroundings. The southern part of the refuge is shared with the Kennedy Space Center, which was built in the 1960s. Despite this overlap, much of the 56,656 hectare (140,000 acre) refuge is available for your exploration. • Such a beautiful place! Lush greenery and a few pretty flowers peeking through as well. Awesome shaded cool boardwalk and great little benches to sit and watch the waters. Frogs, birds, and insects making great noises too! Cute little gift shop inside as well as many educational panels and faux environments to learn from. The workers are passionate and kind.
  • Since I live in the one of the more populated areas of Florida this was amazing. Other than the everglades, I had not been to a spot this wide open open and natural. Super spot for exploring and pure nature.
