The Lawrence Public Library is a public library located in Lawrence, Kansas. It serves the City of Lawrence, and, through its membership in the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS), all of the citizens of the NEKLS multi-county regional library system. The library was originally established as a subscription-based library in 1854, but changed to a free public library upon the donation of a new building by Andrew Carnegie in 1904. The Carnegie library was the main headquarters of the NEKLS and the main library in Lawrence until 1972 when a new modern library replaced it.Add Lawrence Public Library to your Lawrence travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Lawrence trip maker app.

Get there early for the private spaces. Lots of place to sit and read or work at a table a study, etc. Love having the coffee shop in house.

The architecture of this place is awful. The huge south facing windows, letting in the most light, are situated at the entrance and away from the stacks. This sunlit area is blinding and hot and apparently useless space, and precipitates an even more cavelike feeling when walking to the interior. The stacks are dark and claustrophic, as is the checkout area. The main section of the library is so open it is an echo chamber which trumpets any noise throughout the library. One screaming kid in the children's section, and you can hear it easily over in the adult stacks, magnified. The main staircase is open to all, creating noise as well. The architect didn't understand the need for libraries to be well-lighted and as noiseless as possible. The architecture is dramatic but woefully dysfunctional. And where is the dropbox in front of the library? Don't tell me you don't have one!
It's a very well organized and clean library with a big selection of books, movies, and other media. Staff has always been kind and helpful. Computers are available for use and I love the book self-check out.
