Eudora Welty was born in 1909 in Jackson, Mississippi. She moved to 1119 Pinehurst Street with her family when she was sixteen years old. Her parents built the Tudor-Revival style home in what is now known as the Belhaven neighborhood, just north of downtown Jackson. Eudora Welty’s mother, Chestina, designed the garden in 1925, while the house was being constructed. Eudora lived there for the remainder of her life in between her extensive travels. She kept her upstairs bedroom as a place to work and write and maintained her mother's garden throughout her life. Before her death in 2001, Welty donated her house to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. In 2006, the home opened to the public as one of the most intact literary house museums. Expert preservation of her manuscripts, memorabilia, and personal belongings keep her home feeling alive, maintaining forever her sense of place.

  • What a treat! The house has been left much as it was when Ms. Welty lived there. The staff are lovely. A wonderful tribute to a legendary writer.

  • I loved every moment of my time here. I had read the book "One Writer's Garden" and it was the perfect stage-setter for my visit. The docent was knowledgeable and gave a good tour. The tour begins...

  • Great museum tucked away in Jackson. I was in Jackson Mississippi for some work and always remembered doing a research paper on Eudora in high school. It took like 26 years to get here but I finally made it lol. Purposely I didn't tour the main house as that was a guided tour and that I love to explore museums on my own. That package was a reasonably priced $10. Familiar with her work the visitor center and beautiful garden was more than enough and also free. If you are a fan of Mrs. Welty's work or an extensive gardener.... You'll love this tour. I gotta go back in the spring/summer months to get the full garden effects.
  • This is an interesting little piece of history. We didn't tour the house but looked at the pretty gardens outside. Lots of interesting flowers and scenery there.
