Established in 1987 as Alabama's first land trust, we are a member-supported non-profit working to preserve natural North Alabama, fresh water resources, and habitat - making our communities better places to live, work, and play.

Currently seven Nature Preserves include trails for recreation, exercise, and education. All who run - hike - bike - enjoy Land Trust trails are encouraged to join at at least the $35 level to help continue to steward our preserved acres. Join the land preservation movement! Be part of our work to keep preserve our natural heritage!

At 1,107 acres, our flagship Monte Sano Nature Preserve is one of the largest urban nature preserves in the US. Our 65+ miles of trails are the first and only National Recreation Trails in Madison County.

Trail Maps for all public preserves are available at landtrustnal.org.

  • Nice trails, easy to follow, leads to some awesome views, take one of the alternate trails for more challenging hikes if that's your thing.

  • Thank you for making six nature preserves open to the public. Love the 65 miles of trails. Your office is on Artie St and your preserves are all over Madison County. Aaa+++
  • Lovely trails for enjoyment and they protect our nature!
