The only royal palace in America, Iolani Palace saw the reign of Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawaii's last monarch, end with her overthrow in 1893. Soak up the building’s Hawaiian renaissance style, which seems fitting given that the site served as the seat of government for the independent Kingdom of Hawaii. Constructed in 1879, the building has a series of rooms restored to their formal royal glory, complete with period-accurate furnishings, fabrics, and decorations. You can explore the grounds on a docent-led tour or a self-guided audio tour, but be sure to book ahead of time to ensure a spot, as tickets can sell out. • Our visit to the Iolani Palace Museum was wonderful. We went with a visually impaired individual, who also had a great time. Upon entering you are greeted by workers who help you navigate the hearing devices that will be used inside to help you navigate the palace. All of the hearing devices worked perfectly and there are aides inside to help guide you and answer any questions. The wonderful staff who allowed our visually impaired friend to feel certain objects as they gave detailed verbal descriptions and information. The history and knowledge that we received was incredible. This isn’t our first time and it won’t be our last.
  • We really enjoyed learning about the true Hawaiian people and their rulers. Its a somber vibe throughout the palace, the lighting is minimal and you cannot use flash photography...but we were still able to get some decent photos. Its a self guided tour with a phone device that plays a recorded tale of the palace room by room. Check in is a bit confusing because you purchase tickets in the garrison and you're given a specific entry time for the palace which is further inward on the property (not far at all). If you enjoy history, Hawaiian history, artifacts, or wish to learn more about Hawaii...this is a great spot to visit.
