Create an itinerary including Diamond Head State Monument
One of the first natural landmarks you see as you arrive in Honolulu, Diamond Head State Monument offers several vantage points with views of the entire island. Formed by volcanic eruptions more than 150,000 years ago, this tuff cone covers 141 hectares (350 acres). A well-beaten path leads partway to the top. Lengthy metal and concrete staircases make it easier to traverse the steepest sections, and the very narrow tunnels are illuminated. Climb to the summit if you feel fit, or enjoy the views from the lookouts along the way. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring plenty of water and a snack. • Go early in the morning when it's colder than full sun. Quite feasible with children, make sure to bring water and food for them though! ;)

  • Good hike. Lots of people no social distancing at all. Pillbox gets very packed with people fighting for pic opportunities. But the view is indeed incredible. Tips: (1) we took bus from Waikiki and it’s worth it given how expensive rental cars are these days. (2) The infamous pineapple smoothie - $12 - is kinda a ripoff but lots of people get it... (3) Shaved ice is good $4 is not crazy and it cools you down. (4) morning time seems to be most crowded. When we got down around 12pm, the number of people going up is significantly smaller. I’d imagine it should be less crowded in later PM. But morning time is definitely crowded. I saw some cars having to wait for parking spots... (visited June 8, 2021).
  • really liked this hike. it was challenging but most people can complete. got to the top, spectacular views. until i got to the top i had no idea i was hiking up from the bottom of s crater (i did no research on this place, was close to the resort so we went 🤷). i definitely recommend. took us 80 minutes round trip with picture taking at the top. would love to do again!
