Create an itinerary including Wai'anapanapa State Park
Waves crash along the rocky shore at Wai'anapanapa State Park, home to a multitude of freshwater pools and streams in addition to lush Hawaiian vegetation. You can find the park at the end of a road of the same name, just off of Maui's famous Hana Highway. Explore its rocks, formations, and tubes created over thousands of years of geological activity, as well as the nearby blowholes that can blast sea water high into the air. The black sand beach harkens to the area's volcanic heritage, and you can admire and even dip your feet into the blue waters of the Pacific. Keep your eyes open for some of the island's population of nesting seabirds that frequent the park and the surrounding landscape. If you'd like to plan an extended stay, check out the park's camping facilities. Put Wai'anapanapa State Park on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Hana trip builder app.

  • Overrated if you are just doing a look see. Over restrictive scheduling and no adjustment prepayment are not helpful (3 hour limit on visit). Other black sand beeches are available.

  • I have no idea about ticket times as mentioned in some reviews, we had a guide that took care of all that. This place has some amazing views and the black sand beach is worth walking all the steps...

  • Been on the road to Hana 2 other times and this is my first time coming here! The 'pools' have always been the destination, but since you can't swim in them anymore, its kind of a lot down. This place should be the destination from now on! Beautiful black sand beach complete with a lava cave - it was pretty great. My 7 year old even had an amazing time! Make reservations and enjoy!
  • Beautiful black sand beach. The lava tube was cool. Bathroom was gross with no toilet paper which was disappointing since I did pay to get in there. Shower rinse off was good. Tables were shaded and from there we had a nice view of the ocean.
