Nestled in the old town heart of the city, the epicenter of the western cattle industry comes to life at Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. The stockyards today are the last of their kind in America and retain their Wild West charm. Stroll through the town to experience, Texas barbecue, real leather boots, and cowboy hats. Get down and dusty at a rodeo or western show, or slosh back a cold one at the old-time saloon. Very pleasant experience on a Friday morning and early afternoon. However, I think it would have been even better in the late afternoon or early evening. Lots of great shopping for Western Hats, Cowboy boots, etc. Lots of food options, lots of little shops with specialty items. I wouldn't recommend the Stock Yard museum unless you are truly interested in the history of cowboys and the stock exchange. They charge $2 per person for a very small, "thin" museum, which was more a gift.shop.than a museum. Don't miss the chance to play beanbag toss (free) on the lawn in front of the Exchange. For the more adventurous, they have a few live longhorn steers positioned along Exchange Street, that you can sit on and take your own pictures. The photo steers are extremely tame and docile, so okay for kids, though the sheer size will intimidate some kids. (The photo steers are free to mount for photo ops, but they do charge $5 to dismount. 😜) If you need a break from the heat, there are high-quality Adirondack chairs and old-style rocking chairs set up on the loooooong porch immediately in front of the Exchange Building. Shaded in summer, sunnier in winter due to sun angle. Great place to cool off (or warm up) and visit with folks.

This is a great place to visit, for locals and tourists. The longhorns are just so cool to look at, and its always fun to watch tourists gawk in amazement at them sauntering down the street. The kids' faces are always the best! The train, the cute shops, in the arcade...cowboys telling the stories, horse back rides around old town--- Plus all the little things to do around old downtown, it's just a nice place to visit on a spring afternoon. Lots of good eating nearby, cute shops and good people watching to be had.
