Monument to Joe Louis, Detroit

4.1
The Monument to Joe Louis, known also as The Fist, is a memorial to the boxer at Detroit's Hart Plaza.HistoryDedicated on October 16, 1986, the sculpture, commissioned by Sports Illustrated magazine from the Mexican-American sculptor Robert Graham, is a 24ft arm with a fisted hand suspended by a 24ft pyramidal framework. It represents the power of his punch both inside and outside the ring. Because of Louis' efforts to fight Jim Crow laws, the fist was symbolically aimed toward racial injustice. Graham referred to the sculpture as a "battering ram". It is claimed to be an historical metaphor, even down to its placement (pointing toward Canada). The sculpture was vandalized by two white men in 2004, who covered it in white paint and left a sign which read, "Courtesy of Fighting Whities". Graham responded that the piece was "working" if it aroused passion.

  • My kids loved this fist! One of our favorite stops every time we visit. We try to get creative with posing. Dodging traffic is the only risk you’ll take to visit Joe’s solid knockout!
  • It was a fun 2 day trip to go see detroit from Toronto area. We were able to see all the attractions and stuff in just a day. Now compare to other cities in US, Detroit is a little old and run down but they have nice places to visit like belle isle island, Art galleries and nice eateries. But this place was under construction when we went if you go on the other side of the monument to Joe Louis then you can click pictures however no date on construction to be finished.
