The Squirrel Cage Jail, originally known as Pottawattamie County Jail was built in 1885 and was used until 1969. It is now a museum.

We are open April through October for walk in tours. November to the end of March are tours by appointment.

    Interesting jail design. First one like it we've seen. Lots of displays and info on how the jail worked and the design of it. Was pretty harsh on all who were here it seems. Solitary confinement.....  more

    Disappointed that it was closed on Wednesdays...we really wanted to tour it but we could only view the exterior. Seems like everyone has great reviews of the museum....

    A unique experience in Council Bluffs Iowa. This old jail has a unique turntable design that you have to see to believe and understand. We'll worth a stop off of I 80.

    Great piece of history to check out. Have to see in person to learn the working of this place first hand. Seeing what things were like back in that time. How the prisoners lined back then. Wouldn't think there was that much in that one building but it is.
