The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Holy Name Cathedral is the center of Catholic faith in the city and a wonderful example of Gothic revival architecture. The cathedral was built in 1874 in place of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. From the bronze front door depicting the Tree of Life to the detailed bas-relief of Old Testament scenes on the altar, the cathedral is adorned with numerous works of art. Emphasizing the importance music in its liturgical celebrations, the cathedral features organs playing during the daily mass, as well as other events. If you're interested in mob history, you can see bullet marks on the building from the 1926 assassination of Hymie Weiss, one of Chicago's heavy hitters from the Prohibition era. Holy Name Cathedral reviews
Worth a quick stop to see the beauty of this Cathedral. Popped in midafternoon and was wonderful to sit and reflect for a few moments.

Took a group of 10 students to Holy Name Cathedral for a tour and to learn about the church. It's truly a beautiful building, stunning architecture. Our guide was great and made sure to answer the students questions. Worth a stop if your in the area or are into architecture.
Absolutely beautiful Roman Catholic Church in the heart of downtown Chicago. We were here for a wedding and the sound system was excellent, the priest and cantor did a wonderful job and of course hearing the hundred + year old organ really brought back memories of midnight mass! The parish staff that were there to help with the wedding guests were very nice and welcoming. A lovely church and we definitely plan to attend a weekend Mass here again.
