Create an itinerary including Holy Name Cathedral
The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Holy Name Cathedral is the center of Catholic faith in the city and a wonderful example of Gothic revival architecture. The cathedral was built in 1874 in place of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. From the bronze front door depicting the Tree of Life to the detailed bas-relief of Old Testament scenes on the altar, the cathedral is adorned with numerous works of art. Emphasizing the importance music in its liturgical celebrations, the cathedral features organs playing during the daily mass, as well as other events. If you're interested in mob history, you can see bullet marks on the building from the 1926 assassination of Hymie Weiss, one of Chicago's heavy hitters from the Prohibition era. Check online for the full schedule of masses. See Holy Name Cathedral and all Chicago has to offer by arranging your trip with our Chicago trip builder site.

  • The sanctuary’s design is absolutely stunning. Great mass, the Flentrop Organ(Baroque style)is absolutely beautiful sounding and the pipe casing is very nicely decorated. It was my first time in October last year, I enjoyed the topic of homily………..could’ve been on the shorter side, but other than that. This is a place I recommend. As we all know, god’s doors are open to all.
  • Holy name Cathedral is a wonderful experience. You will find HOPE, love, and the Joy of Christ JESUS. The Holy spirit is alive and you will feel it here. Bring everything in your life here the LORD JESUS works through his people with Love. God bless you.
