Home to what's thought to be the largest cast-iron statue in the world Vulcan Park and Museum tells the history of steel production in the city. Created for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and made of 100,000 pounds of iron, the statue was modeled after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge. It represents the spirit of the city and symbolizes its origins in iron. Tour the museum to learn about the impact of steel production on this area. Climb to the top of the observation tower for a view of the city, but make sure to bring a jacket or sweater since it can get windy. There is a jogging path at the bottom of the hill, picnic areas throughout the park, and free parking available. It has been many years since I have visited Vulcan. The park has come such a long way. It is absolutely beautiful! The grounds are kept up nicely and there is so much more to do there now. I was very impressed with the park and Vulcan. All of the fun facts around the park were pretty incredible. We will definitely be going back on a regular basis. Great job guys for making Birmingham a beautiful attraction, keeping it up and making it inexpensive.
I have traveled through the area a number of times and was always curious about the staue in the distance. The story is amazing. My visit was in July during an Educators History workshop and the park was a great redirection of energy on some particularly hard history learning days. The site is lovely during the day, but it's breathtaking at night! So much so I was too deep in awe to snap nighttime pictures! The panoramic views of the city are fantastic. Definitely a must visit when in Birmingham.
