Texas State Capitol, Austin

4.7
Must see · Government Building · Architectural Building
At the time of its construction, Texas' Texas State Capitol was billed as the seventh largest building in the world. The massive Italian Renaissance Revival building was completed in 1888 and is home to the chambers of the Texas Legislature and the office of the governor. You can take a self-guided or guided tour of the building and grounds. Don’t miss the rotunda, displaying a portrait of every person who has served as the president of the Republic of Texas or governor of the state. The 8.9 hectare (22 acre) grounds boast a variety of monuments. Two of the oldest are dedicated to the Heroes of the Alamo and Confederate soldiers. The visitor center contains a gift shop and exhibits about the Capitol. For Texas State Capitol and beyond, use our Austin trip itinerary website to get the most from your Austin vacation.

  • There are many places on the lawn to take nice photos at. This is a great place to have a picnic at as well. Will definitely visit here again when I find myself back in Austin.  more »

  • This place is well maintained. When in Austin, this is nice place for a walk, just few blocks away from all the good food places of Austin. The gift shop has plenty to offer. Staff are friendly. Best time to come is during after office less traffic. But if you want to see the inside of this place, be there during office hours.
  • How proud we are to be Texans! Our State Capitol building and grounds are praise worthy. We had not planned to take a tour, because we had visited many times before, but we are so glad we did. We first visited informally with one guide, who is a retired history teacher, and, because of his encouragement, we decided to take the next tour available. Becky was our guide, and she was a wealth of knowledge. Instead of a 1/2 hour tour, she spent a whole hour with us. The visit to the Capitol and the tour were definite highlights of our short trip to Austin. We highly recommend enjoying one of the tours offered by the outstanding staff.
