The largest and oldest occupied castle in the world, Windsor Castle has been a home to British monarchs since Henry I began using it in the 11th century. The focal point of your visit should be the staterooms. They date to the late 17th century, when Charles II set out to make the castle as lavish as Versailles. George IV further enhanced these rooms during his reign in the 1820s, and today you'll see how they reflect his extravagant taste. Make sure you see Queen Mary's dollhouse, which was built to a 1:12 scale and is the largest and perhaps most richly appointed dollhouse in the world. St. George's Chapel's fine gothic architecture and grand stone-fan vaulting make it a highlight of the tour. Before you start your visit, pick up a free audio guide in the courtyard. Nice grounds. Great history. Not too busy on a Saturday in January. Plenty of amenities, a few shops. Nowhere to get food. To visit the rooms you need to leave buggies downstairs. Everywhere else is accessible. I see they're building more accessible facilities now
Hive of activity. Changing of the guards is always good. Good range of shops. The Great Walk and boat trips on The Thames are also very worthwhile doing. Highly recommended. Also a good meeting place.
