Banqueting House, London

4.2
The last thing that King Charles I of England saw before his execution, Banqueting House holds an important place in the English architectural genre of banqueting houses. Finished in 1622, this particular banqueting house was the first completed of its kind in a neoclassical style, which served as a turning point in English architecture. Learn more of the building's history in a brief film shown before you enter the main room. Follow an audio guide as you move through the sizeable room. Panels painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1635 cover the 16.7 m (55 ft) ceiling. Grab a bean bag chair to relax and absorb the exquisite detailing in the artwork as the audio guide provides background information. • It costs £7 to view the one room. Given that, the ceiling is fantastic. There is plenty of seating around the edge of the room and several bean bags in the middle to allowing viewing from a more horizontal position. There is a video room on the ground floor so don't miss the potted history, which is fascinating. There is also a free audio guide.
  • A Royal Palace in Whitehall, sometime. The introduction is good. The audio guides are available in several languages. If you enjoy Ruben's, please make your way upstairs now. The masterpieces adorned the ceiling, so relax on the bean bags, and enjoy. Highly recommended, will visit again. The size and scale of Reuben's genius in the Banqueting House is unprecedented. It is rare to view another piece of Art on this scale and majesty. There is a collection of period costumes for the visitors and tourists to dress on. Put your favourites on and take a selfie against the imposing canopy. For a laugh and a great day out. The Banqueting House is a ticketed event in Whitehall. Thank you.
