The Burren travel guide

4.3
Caves · Nightlife · Gift & Specialty Shops
The Burren gets its name from an anglicized version of the Irish word "Boireann," which translates to "rocky place." Showcasing giant slabs of exposed limestone with little to no soil cover, the landscape provides a sharp contrast to Ireland's lush green fields. Between the jagged angles of rock run small streams and varied fauna fills in the gaps between the stony outcroppings. The mixture of arctic, Mediterranean, and alpine plants all growing in the rocky ground make the Burren a distinctive place to visit.
