Established by presidential decree in 1831, Tacuarembo grew over time into the capital of its eponymous department, largely because of its agricultural industry fed by the Tacuarembo river that flows through the northern part of town.
Step out of Tacuarembo with an excursion to Valle del Lunarejo in Rivera--about 1h 20 min away. There's still lots to do: explore the striking landscape at Pozo Hondo, relax and rejuvenate at Balneario Ipora, see the interesting displays at Museo Carlos Gardel, and admire the masterpieces at Museo de Artes Visuales de Tacuarembo (MUART).
