Yellow Rose of Texas

Known as "The Yellow Rose of Texas," Amarillo was once a series of ranches.
Kick off your visit on the 10th (Mon): trot along with Palo Duro Riding Stables and then explore the ancient world of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Keep things going the next day: view the masterpieces at American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum, take in the spiritual surroundings of The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and then get to know the fascinating history of Lighthouse Trail.

Dallas to Amarillo is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Prepare for little chillier weather when traveling from Dallas in August: high temperatures in Amarillo hover around 89°F and lows are around 65°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Tue) early enough to travel to Durango.

Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Get some cultural insight at Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum and Southern Ute Museum and Cultural Center. Get outdoors at Off-Road Tours and River Rafting & Tubing. There's much more to do: kick your exploration up a notch at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks, explore the landscape on two wheels at The Colorado Trail, trek along Animas Mountain Trail, and take in the exciting artwork at Earthen Vessel Gallery.
