Sintra Municipality travel guide
The Portuguese royalty recognized the natural beauty of Sintra Municipality centuries ago, building a lavish palace and gardens there to serve as one of their summer retreats. The World Heritage-listed municipality sits at the foothills of forest-covered mountains, a huge draw for hikers and nature lovers. The hills overlooking the town also boast well-preserved remains of a Moorish castle, originally constructed sometime in the 9th century. Sintra serves as a good base for exploring the region and draws throngs of day-trippers from nearby Lisbon. Beat the crowds by timing your sightseeing tour for early in the morning, or immerse yourself in local history and culture by settling in one of the municipality's serene villages.
