As the political and cultural capital of China, Beijing stands at the heart of Chinese history, buzzing with the energy of its high population density and centuries of importance.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Mutianyu Great Wall and Temple of Heaven. Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) and The Palace Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. There's lots more to do: get engrossed in the history at Lama Temple (Yonghegong), take in the spiritual surroundings of Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum Xiannongtan Temple, take in panoramic vistas at Bell and Drum Towers, and see the interesting displays at National Museum Of China.

Jinan to Beijing is an approximately 4-hour train ride. You can also take a train; or drive; or take a bus. September in Beijing sees daily highs of 31°C and lows of 17°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Sun) so you can fly to Xi'an.

Xi'an — 2 nights

Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
On the 21st (Mon), don't miss a visit to Kaiyuan Square, take an in-depth tour of The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, and then delve into the distant past at Xi'an City Wall (Chengqiang). On the 22nd (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take in panoramic vistas at Xi'an Bell Tower, then steep yourself in history at Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta), and then admire the masterpieces at Shanxi Art Museum.

Shangri-La County — 2 nights

Known previously as Zhongdian, Shangri-La County gained its current name in an attempt by city officials to promote tourism.
Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Wed): take in the exciting artwork at Tubo Tibetan Thangka Store, then contemplate the long history of Dukezong Ancient Town, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Sumtsaling Monastery. On the 24th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: walk around Guishan Park, then indulge your thirst for a good beer at Shangri-La Highland Craft Brewery, and then take some stellar pictures from Shika Snow Mountains.

Lijiang — 1 night

The cultural capital of the Naxi people, one of the 55 minority ethnic groups in the country, Lijang traces its history back over 800 years, with the city developing from a trading post on the ancient Southern Silk Road.
Kick off your visit on the 25th (Fri): pause for some photo ops at Sanyan Well, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Old Town of Lijiang - China, then don't miss a visit to Yuhe Square, and finally contemplate the long history of Shuhe Ancient Town.

Combining a glorious past with modern conveniences and scenic natural surroundings, Dali stands out as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Yunnan, perched in a strategic location and boasting fertile fields for agriculture.
Start off your visit on the 26th (Sat): stop by Dali Ancient, enjoy breathtaking views from Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple (Northwest Gate), and then view the masterpieces at Da Li Shi Kong Guo Shi Museum. On the next day, take in the spiritual surroundings of Dali Erhai Tianjing Temple and then delve into the lush surroundings at Erhai Lake.
