As the political and cultural capital of China, Beijing stands at the heart of Chinese history, buzzing with the energy of its high population density and centuries of importance.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Mutianyu Great Wall and Temple of Heaven. Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) and Dong Yue Miao (Dongyue Temple) are good opportunities to explore the local culture. And it doesn't end there: admire the striking features of The Palace Museum, take an in-depth tour of Lama Temple (Yonghegong), take in the spiritual surroundings of Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum Xiannongtan Temple, and examine the collection at National Museum Of China.

Jinan to Beijing is an approximately 4.5-hour train ride. You can also drive; or fly. In September in Beijing, expect temperatures between 31°C during the day and 17°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Sun) to allow time to travel to Xi'an.

Xi'an

Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
On the 21st (Mon), don't miss a visit to Kaiyuan Square, take an in-depth tour of The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, and then delve into the distant past at Xi'an City Wall (Chengqiang). On the 22nd (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take in panoramic vistas at Xi'an Bell Tower, then steep yourself in history at Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta), and then admire the masterpieces at Shanxi Art Museum.

You can fly from Beijing to Xi'an in 5.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or drive. In September, daily temperatures in Xi'an can reach 29°C, while at night they dip to 19°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Tue) so you can travel to Shangri-La County.

Shangri-La County

Known previously as Zhongdian, Shangri-La County gained its current name in an attempt by city officials to promote tourism.
Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Wed): take in the exciting artwork at Tubo Tibetan Thangka Store, then contemplate the long history of Dukezong Ancient Town, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Sumtsaling Monastery. On the 24th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: walk around Guishan Park, then indulge your thirst for a good beer at Shangri-La Highland Craft Brewery, and then take some stellar pictures from Shika Snow Mountains.

Getting from Xi'an to Shangri-La County by flight takes about 7 hours. Other options: do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Thu) to allow enough time to take a bus to Lijiang.

The cultural capital of the Naxi people, one of the 55 minority ethnic groups in the country, Lijang traces its history back over 800 years, with the city developing from a trading post on the ancient Southern Silk Road.

Start off your visit on the 26th (Sat): stop by Dali Ancient, enjoy breathtaking views from Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple (Northwest Gate), and then view the masterpieces at Da Li Shi Kong Guo Shi Museum.
