Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
Start off your visit on the 13th (Tue): explore the world behind art at Tang Bo Art Museum, then delve into the distant past at Xi'an Bell Tower, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Xi'an Mosque. Jinan to Xi'an is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. In October in Xi'an, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 10°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 14th (Wed) so you can catch the flight to Dunhuang.

Dunhuang

Once a vital stop-off on the Silk Road trade route, Dunhuang today offers travelers of all persuasions a place to rest in the middle of the desert.
Kick off your visit on the 15th (Thu): make a trip to Sanwei Mountain Scenic Resort, Head underground at Mogao Caves, and then make a trip to Shazhou Nightly Market. Keep things going the next day: take an in-depth tour of Dunhuang Folk Museum, take in the awesome beauty at Mingsha Shan - Echoing-Sand Mountain, and then explore the ancient world of Duhuang Ancient City Ruins.

Traveling by flight from Xi'an to Dunhuang takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or drive. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Fri) to allow enough time to fly to Lhasa.

Lhasa

The capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa possesses a wealth of Tibetan Buddhist sites of historical and cultural importance.
Get outdoors at Nature & Wildlife Tours and Off-Road Tours. Step off the beaten path and head to Sera Monastery and Barkhor Street. There's more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Jokhang Temple.

Getting from Dunhuang to Lhasa by flight takes about 7.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a train. In October, daytime highs in Lhasa are 20°C, while nighttime lows are 5°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Mon) so you can fly to Shangri-La County.

Shangri-La County

Known previously as Zhongdian, Shangri-La County gained its current name in an attempt by city officials to promote tourism.
Kick off your visit on the 20th (Tue): explore the stunning scenery at Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia). On the 21st (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: walk around Guishan Park and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Sumtsaling Monastery.

Lijiang

Suzhou on the Plateau

The cultural capital of the Naxi people, one of the 55 minority ethnic groups in the country, Lijang traces its history back over 800 years, with the city developing from a trading post on the ancient Southern Silk Road.
On the 22nd (Thu), steep yourself in history at Mufu Palace, then steep yourself in history at Shuhe Ancient Town, and then take in the pleasant sights at Blue Moon Valley.
